A book has recently come out for the Irish Youth Foundation based on a Twitter feed called With Love From Me…To Me A Letter to My Sixteen-Year Old Self. People have been reading out letters on the radio and on TV, so I decided to dig out my old diaries and write one to myself!
Let me set the scene…..In 1996/1997 I was 16 years old and I was in my second last year of school. According to my diary entry for this week in 1996 my main concerns in life were tests. English, history, maths and biology seemed to be bothering me the most. It was cold and I took some classes off because of the weather and I bought a pair of Levi’s! Oh the excitement!!!
Anyhow, I looked forward through the year and this is what I’ve come up with.
Dear Me,
You’re sixteen years old. Remember that….six-teen not sixty. You’re incredibly stressed. Your main concerns at the moment are tests, school, going out, friends and boys. so, my number one piece of advice from me to me is CHILL OUT!
School is school. You’re a good student and you’ll get through it anyway. Art is where you’re happiest. Don’t forget about it. Maths is your biggest problem and you’re getting lessons outside of school. You’ll meet a guy there who’ll be a really good friend for years to come. The Leaving Cert is not the be-all and end-all. You’ll feel so much less stressed when it’s over.
Your circle of friends is changing at the moment and you’re quite upset about it. Realise that friendships change. Some you’re only supposed to have for a short time and some are for life. The person you shared a love of matching denim outfits with when you were ten is not going to stick around. (Luckily, your love of 100% denim outfits doesn’t either….phew!) You have some really good friends now and you’ll meet some more in the next couple of years. Together they’ll become your support network.
As for going out, you look young-very young. Going out is a hassle because you get stopped for ID everywhere you go. This will continue until you’re in your late twenties. You will even be asked for ID in the middle of the day when you’re with your Mum. However, you realise after a few years that there’s more to life than pubs. This won’t stop you trying to go out every weekend though! Sometimes you’ll get in, sometimes you won’t. You’re really sensible,so , again, stop stressing about it. You’re not going to go to jail if you get caught with a fake ID!
Now for the boys. Just kiss them. Get it over with. Kiss the one you fancy and then find another and kiss him. Just because you kiss a guy doesn’t mean you’ll have to sleep with him or stay with him forever. Just kiss a lot of guys! The right one is surprisingly close to home!
Finally, I really can’t stress this enough, so I’m going to repeat my opening statement: CHILL OUT!
Lots of Love,
Me XXXXXXXXX
